Happy Holidays, from our family to yours!
Strangely enough, my last blog was about my hardware family and this one is as well. Must be getting sentimental in my old age.
For most of us, the holidays are a special time of year. Memories of Christmas past, opening presents, (especially the year we got a puppy!) walking in the snow Christmas day, decorating the tree and singing around the piano with my mom and sisters while one of them played are some of my favorites. The piano playing talent skipped me but I could always hold my own on the carols.
Today’s holiday memories are just as special but they’re very different. Being in retail means working a lot of hours, especially this time of year. I am very fortunate to have an amazing staff that ALSO works a lot of hours so that I can work fewer hours than I did 25 years ago. Those extra few hours with Linda and the dogs or with friends really make a difference and I am very appreciative.
One of my very favorite things about the holidays are all the people that stop by Nelson’s Ace to visit. I can’t tell you an exact figure but there have been a LOT of people that have worked at Nelson’s over the last 35 years. Many of them High School age kids that Dad, I or Annette hired, providing them with their first job. It’s difficult to explain the feeling I get when these “kids” that gave their time and efforts to Nelson’s stop by to visit when they are home. Many bring their children in to meet “their first boss” or to visit with their “hardware family”. Social media is a wonderful way to keep up with my “kids” but it’s not the same as a hug, some conversation or the opportunity to hold and admire a new addition to their family. (4 legged OR 2 legged) Maybe even take a picture or two to memorialize the moment.
Holiday traditions happen at retail as well as the home and Nelson’s has a couple started by my Mom and Dad. We dress up on the day after Thanksgiving and on Christmas eve. You’ll see myself in a suit coat and tie and the rest of the crew in their holiday best. Christmas hats, scarves and pins will be seen in Nelson’s throughout the month of December. The other tradition is that Nelson’s always has a wreath on the front of our building. Nothing fancy, just a real fir wreath big enough to show the world that the holidays have arrived at Nelson’s.
Our newest tradition is our annual Ladies Night. (8th ). This year Ladies Night is on December 11th from 5:00-8:00pm. We close up at 4:00pm and reopen at 5:00 ready to rock! Great local food, snacks and treats, a ton of prizes drawn every hour and some super Grand Prizes are always a hit. Oops, I forgot to mention that Ladies Night also has a 20% store wide discount! (some exclusions)
